For audio mastering, I always use the SSL G COMP as a stereo compressor, but I wanted to try other types, such as Vari-Mu compressors. I finally got Heritage Audio Grandchild 670 which is a truly Vari-Mu comp that drives by real vacuum tubes!

I always looked for the Vari-mu comp but that is super pricy for me. I know there are many tubes and it’s a complicated build that’s why the price is so high. I had almost given up on buying a Vari-mu comp… but then Heritage Audio released the Grandchild 670 which is just perfect for me! It’s a 500 module and the price is very fair.

It’s a nice looking panel, with a retro feel. In fact, this compact panel is very functional. Some of the other 500 modules are a bit difficult to control with switches and buttons. About the “sound”, it’s very smooth and clear, no “dull” sound. I’d say that this sound is very modern, not “old” or “retro”. It certainly adds some tube harmonics and makes the sound “warmer” and “smoother.” I don’t think I can reproduce the same sound with a digital plugin!

Inside the Grandchild 670 I can see the actual tunes! By the way… this unit gets extreme hot when turned on. It’s kind of scary! Haha. :-)
